History

The history of the Institute begins in 2005, when at the Engineering and Technology Institute was opened a specialty 071501.65 Artistic design of costume with the qualification «artist-stylist». In the same year, the department «Visual arts» was formed.

In 2006 the second specialty was opened 070601.65 - Design of environment and on the basis of the department of Fine Arts in 2011 the faculty of Design and Arts was created.

Since 2013 the faculty prepares bachelor’s degrees in the field of training 54.03.01 Design, profiles: 54.03.01 Costume design and Environment design.

In 2022, by decision of the Academic Council of the Academy, the faculty was renamed to the faculty «Design and linguistics» and its composition included the department of Linguistics, which was later renamed to the department of Linguistics and Intercultural Communication.

In 2024, by decision of the Academic Council of the Academy, the Faculty «Design and Linguistics» was reorganized into the Institute «Design and Linguistics».

The Institute has been holding the Annual International Competition of Young Designers of Mingi-Tau at the Academy since 2005, which is a starting point for young costume designers, interior, exterior, landscape and artists.

The Institute is known for its achievements not only in the region, in Russia, but also abroad. Students of the institute become winners and winners of all-Russian, international competitions, exhibitions, festivals. Many graduates hold leading positions in advertising agencies, book and magazine editions, successfully work as leading specialists and managers in architectural and design offices, are authors of implemented projects of urban design objects. They also work successfully as stylist artists in various industrial enterprises, creating individual and mass fashion. Often heads of industrial enterprises and model organizations turn to the department with a request to send them to work young professionals. Senior students are invited to work as fashion designers and stylists.

The educational process at the institute is carried out within the framework of approved curricula and organized in accordance with regulatory and policy documents. Students of the institute pass a production and pre-diploma internship in organizations whose profile of work corresponds to the chosen specialty.

All scientific and pedagogical employees of the institute have state honorary titles, diplomas of laureates and degrees from international and national competitions, are members of various creative unions in the relevant professional field.

The Institute’s career development work is carried out in two directions:

• Attracting applicants to open-door days, participation in educational fairs and the formation of professional self-determination of high school students as part of visiting work at secondary education institutions;

• Assistance in the employment of graduates in relevant institutions.

The specific nature of creative education ensures a direct and inseparable link between the learning process and practice through:

• Working closely with potential employers;

• Organization of students' industrial and pre-graduate internship;

• Functioning on the basis of the Academy of the Language Training Center and courses of additional education in the Institute.

The main priorities for the development of the Institute are:

• Improving the quality of educational and scientific activities;

• Ensuring a high level of demand for the results of this activity in practice and on the labor market;

• Integration into the world educational and scientific space.
