The Institute of Economics and Management traces its history back to 1991. At that time, the Karachay-Cherkess State Technological Institute (now the North Caucasus State Academy) established an accounting and finance faculty that combined economic specialisations. The organiser and dean of the faculty was Konstantin Maksimovich Matsev, Honoured Worker of Higher Professional Education of the Russian Federation, professor, and candidate of economic sciences.
In 2010, the faculty was reorganised into the Economic Institute of the Karachay-Cherkess State Technological Academy, headed by Rashid Aleksandrovich Kantserov, Candidate of Economic Sciences, Professor. In 2014, the Economic Institute was reorganised into the Institute of Economics and Management of the North Caucasus State Humanitarian and Technological Academy.
Today, the Institute of Economics and Management is one of the largest structural divisions of the North Caucasus State Academy. Over the past five years, more than 300 students, master's and doctoral students of the Institute of Economics and Management have become winners and prize-winners of various All-Russian and International Olympiads and Competitions, including those held by the Youth Union of Economists and Financiers of the Russian Federation. Within the framework of the Institute of Economics and Management, three new master's programmes were launched in 2015-2016 in the field of 38.04.01 ‘Economics’. In 2017, following the results of the Student Association Development Program Competition (PRDSO - 2017), held annually by the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia, students of the Institute of Economics and Management received financial support and won a subsidy of 1 million rubles for the implementation of their program: ‘Regional Forum on Financial Literacy among Students and Youth.’ Since 2010, students of the institute have been actively participating in the work of the North Caucasus Youth Educational Forum “Mashuk” in Pyatigorsk and annually become winners of grant competitions for youth projects in various categories.
Considerable attention is paid to the organisation of leisure and recreation for students. They participate in various sports events, volunteer movements, charitable activities, and KVN (Club of the Cheerful and Sharp-Witted), and are actively involved in creative activities, where they have repeatedly won and taken high prize places. In addition, every year during the winter and summer holidays, students from our institute are sent as a reward to the Narat Academy recreation centre in Arkhyz and the Kholodok recreation centre in Yakornaya Shchel (on the Black Sea coast).
